What Started And Why Were Old Barns In The South Painted Red?

Thinking it could be due to paint pigments available at the time,,and visibility as the lighthouse colors too….?close to correct??

    It was an agreement worked out at the time to advertise “See Rock City ” in large letters. Rock City is in Chattanooga, TN. In return the farmers got their barns painted red.
