My father has taken a statin drug for 4 weeks and has developed serious muscle ache in both his legs, a far more serious sympton than anything he experienced from his bypass operation 2 weeks ago. Can he do anything to help rid his body of this drug and its effects? Thanks.

Stop taking it and call his doctor. If the symptoms are caused by the drug then they should go away when he stops taking it.
That is a serous symptom, that can be fatal it pans out to be what it might be. He needs to contact his doctor.
Rhabdomyolysis, is a rare side effect of statins and if left unchecked can cause kidney failure. See page 16 of the FDA information on lipitor and example of a statin.
Some statins are safer than others.http://www.fda.gov/cder/foi/label/2007/0…
Generally, this is not a good sign, and his doctor should be notified immediately.
You’ve got me worried I’ve been taking statins for quite a while now along with several other drugs and I do get a lot of muscular pain, think I’ll take a copy of this to my doctor, and see what he has to say!
Don’t stop taking it. Never stop anything without speaking to a doctor.
But yes he should speak to his doctor.
I am a doctor, and he should stop taking it. This is a very common and well known side effect of statins. His doctor may try lowering the dose or switching to a different statin (which sometimes works), but for now, don’t take any more and contact your doctor to let him/her know of the reaction
look up rhabdomylosis. Or check the packaging with the statins for side effects. This can be signs of a muscle wasting disease that comes from statins. Rare but should be checked out.
He can get his butt to the hospital right now. If he’s having rhabdomyolysis, it can lead quickly to renal failure. And with his recent heart problems, large amounts of IV fluids and diuretics are going to be risky but likely necessary.
I don’t know I have two stints and have a similar problem. I also have to limit my sodium so there is not much for pain I can take.Good luck.
one of the serious side effects of statins is rhabodmyolysis ( destruction of skeletal muscles ) which might lead to renal failure … stop the medication immediatly and contact the doctor to report that side effect ..
